Finding Life on 2 Wheels
I can’t really know a place until I have explored it by bicycle. The slower pace, open air, heightened senses…all permit an exploration that is nearly impossible in the comfortable confines of a car. Everywhere I go I find a way to ride in it, through it, around it…something that allows me to discover people, places, and things that would be overlooked if I didn’t.
It’s more than simply exercise, as good as that is. It’s the way I have found necessary to develop balance in my life. Most of the rest of the time I am frantically moving through life attempting to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible with the least amount of interruption or distraction. But on the bike, I always end up where I started so it’s less about destination and more about exploration.
One outcome of the Covid pandemic has been the slower pace of life for many of us. It has permitted opportunity to take stock and re-evaluate priorities. However, as roads again become congested, as offices open back up, as schools transition back to in-person classes, and travel again becomes viable, in short, as our lives go back to what was normal to some degree, we potentially could climb back on the treadmill. The frantic pace of life dictated by our pursuit of comfort and material possessions has the potential to once again become preeminent.
As we enter back into life, vaccinated from the virus that has held us captive for the past year, we still have the opportunity to change. We have been given a window that will allow us to live life differently, though that window will not remain open for long. We can continue to slow down, connect with those around us, pursue exploration rather than destination.
Life on two wheels allows a slower pace of life, regular opportunities to meet with others and hear their stories. Life on two wheels encourages exploration at a pace that enhances the senses and fosters connections with people who have completely different life experiences. As soon as I am able, I intend to explore Atlanta on two wheels and I hope that you will join me so that together we can discover the sights, sounds, and community that surrounds us.
