We are all saddened by Lane’s decision to resign as Senior Pastor of the Roswell Presbyterian Church, effective May 1, 2015. We know that the past few months have been difficult for Lane and respect his decision to focus on his health and his family at this time. We will continue to pray for Lane and his family. Roswell Presbyterian Church has been blessed with Lane’s faithful service for over twenty years – his leaving is a tremendous loss to our congregation, our church staff, our denomination, and, indeed, our community.
So, while our hearts are heavy, we want you to know that we have definitive plans in place to insure continuity as we transition to new leadership. This letter is to update you on those plans.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Order outlines the process for dealing with pastoral changes in our denomination. A congregational meeting for the purpose of dissolving our pastoral relationship with Lane has been called for April 19, 2015, following the 11:15 service. Further, our Session has appointed an Interim Pastor Nominating Committee (IPNC). That committee has already started work defining the responsibilities of an interim pastor and identifying potential candidates for the position.
As you know, the timetable for this search is difficult to predict. However, the goal is to have an interim pastor in place by the start of the church program year this August. Please pray that this process works in accordance with God’s will. The Personnel Committee has recommended that Reverend Emily Wright serve as Acting Head of Staff following Lane’s resignation until an interim pastor is found.
Once these actions are fully in motion, the Session will nominate a committee (Pastor Nominating Committee) to conduct a search for our next Senior Pastor. The congregation will elect this committee.
Also, the staff and Personnel Committee are planning a special service to honor and celebrate Lane’s service to RPC in the near future. We will keep you informed as these plans develop.
What, you may ask, can I do as a member of RPC in the face of this change in leadership? Lane has expressed a strong desire to see Roswell Presbyterian Church continue to thrive and serve this community. So how do we do that? The simple answer is to continue supporting the work of this church – attend worship, maintain financial support, stay involved in regular church programming, and trust God to guide us through this transition.
We will do our best to keep you informed of all developments as together we make this journey. The attached document provides information about the situation in greater detail.
