The Waiting Room

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. - Isaiah 43:19 (ESV)
The most difficult waiting I've experienced is waiting for God to transform something. When you are the one in the desert - not a sign of shade or water in sight - it is natural to look around and say, "No way can God make a river here."
One such time for me was during our journey to family. The adoption process was a gauntlet of paperwork, interviews, appointments, and trainings - years of pushing, waiting, persisting, and discerning where God was leading us. One particular night, I was very discouraged and upset, doubting that God could make a family by way of a very broken system and through so much sadness in our world.
It is through music that I hear God's voice most clearly, affirming, supporting, and encouraging me as only the Holy Spirit can. Through my tears that night, I heard Gungor's Beautiful Things in my headphones, pointing me back to this scripture from Isaiah and reminding me of God's ability to transform all things - even the seemingly hopeless.
When we have challenges, leaning in for God's help, guidance, and peace instead of trying to muscle through it alone is a critical part of walking in faith. Trusting that God is doing a new thing - although I may not perceive it, much less understand it - is hard, but to me, it's the essence of Advent.
Several years later, our family is complete, and one of God's wonderful transformations is bringing our family to Roswell and to RPC. Here we experience God's love in this community, and I am so grateful for that.
God, we know you are with us, working in, around, and through us every day. Please help us lean in to you, trusting your love of us and your ability to make beautiful things out of dust. Draw us close and fill us with your peace while we are waiting. In Christ's name. Amen.
