The Waiting Room
Wednesday, December 13

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Recently, while sitting in a waiting room in a hospital far from home, I had never felt more alone. Waiting is never easy for me in any circumstance. Our society has taught us to seek answers for our questions and to turn to the internet for our every need. However, I discovered two things: that the hands on the clock move VERY SLOWLY and that fear moves VERY QUICKLY to fill every nook and cranny of our hearts and minds. And so I prayed.
Intellectually, I knew there was nothing more I could do and that my husband's life was in God's hands. What a blessing it was then to feel God wrap His arms around me and feel the assurance that I didn't need to be in control. What a blessing it was to know there were God-loving family and friends praying along with me. Perhaps the biggest blessing was the prayers of our ministers and friends at RPC. God's timing seemed to always be perfect with a caring voice on the phone or a text message when we needed it most.
Once I had given my husband up to God's care, I began to notice others around me also waiting and began to pray that God would bless them with His peace and presence. My mind was no longer filled with fear, and I could let my heart go out to those strangers sitting around me knowing they may be feeling the same emotions I was experiencing. I was alone, but no longer lonely.
As we wait through this Advent season to celebrate the most important event of all time, I'm giving thanks to God for being there in my darkest hour with his grace, love, and peace.
Lord, help me to use this time to prepare my heart to celebrate your birth; to prepare my mind to focus on those things you have taught us are most important; and to use my hands to accomplish your will. Amen.
