The Waiting Room - Tuesday, December 26 - Advent 2017 Devotional

Christmastide is one of the seasons of the liturgical year in the Christian church defined as the period between Christmas Eve and Epiphany. The same period is also commonly known as The Twelve Days of Christmas.

The Twelve Days of Christmas are important because they give us a way of reflecting on what the Incarnation means in our lives. Christmas commemorates the most momentous event in human history - the entry of God into the world he made, in the form of a baby.

Roswell Presbyterian Church published The Waiting Roomour Advent 2017 devotional. This devotional featured stories from RPC members, who through vulnerability, honesty, and great strength, shared times when they had to wait. They reflected on the difficulty of that process, but also the ways that God sustained them in the process as well.

Here is one of the two additional devotionals that were submitted as we celebrate The Twelve Days of Christmas and what it means when all this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." (Matthew 1:22-23)

Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him. - Psalm 37:7 (NRSV)

Patience with God is Faith. A lesson I continue to remind myself.

Every Christmas, I wait with anxious anticipation for the birth of our Savior. Remembering years past, scurrying around shopping, and planning our family Christmas Eve celebration.

The beautiful hymns of Christmas, old and new, have the power to teach us, move us, and touch our lives. I love this Advent prayer response, "While We Are Waiting, Come," from the new Presbyterian Hymnal, Glory to God:

While we are waiting, come; while we are waiting, come.
Jesus, our Lord, Emmanuel, while we are waiting, come.
With power and glory, come; with power and glory, come.
Jesus, our Lord, Emmanuel, while we are waiting, come.
Come, Savior, quickly come; come, Savior, quickly come.
Jesus, our Lord, Emmanuel, while we are waiting, come.

PRAYER:
God of Love, thank you for the gift of light and life, your Son, Emmanuel. Amen.
