The Waiting Room

I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. - Psalm 62:1 (NLT)
We were waiting for our first Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers to arrive. My church at that time, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, had approved plans to begin a new ministry of music. On Tuesday mornings, twice a month, we volunteers had been given the use of the church's youth facility - a big beautiful room with a great sound system - to play the beloved songs of yesteryear. There were folding chairs that we placed in a circle; a wet bar where we would serve snacks, juice, and coffee; and even two very nice restrooms. Everything was in readiness, but we were nervous. How would they respond to our friendliness? Would they sing? Would they be happier when they left us after the allotted hour-and-a-half?
All the volunteers were ladies, but our leader was a gentleman, who had been working in England when he saw this kind of ministry on television. He was struck with the power of music to calm and organize the brains of people, who are deeply disorganized by Alzheimer's. It seemed so rewarding for them to be able to reach back in time and remember songs from days gone by.
When the Alzheimer's folk began to arrive, our jitters disappeared. From the time we greeted them until the vehicles transporting them pulled away, the response was all we had hoped for. They enjoyed our attention, the refreshments, and the music. All the old songs from World War II to Sunday School - like This Little Light of Mine - were sung by some with great gusto. Others kept time by clapping, and others smilingly listened. The time flew by.
One minibus was still pulling away as I walked through the parking lot toward my car. From the bus I heard singing. It was something we had sung earlier, "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so."
Thank You, Lord, for the opportunity to share Your love with others. Amen.
