The goal I pursue is the prize of God's upward call in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:14
There is always a challenge in our everyday lives to balance the constant state of distractions while maintaining a focus on faith. For many of us, family life is often at the center of our focus. While family life should be an important priority, it can also steer us away from our attention to faith. Raising a family by today's standards can be very overwhelming. There are so many things that can pull our attention away, such as social media, academics, activities, relationships, and sports.
For my family, the time management of sports has been a major obstacle in our attention to faith. We all have a shared passion for sports. Our children have grown up playing a multitude of sports, such as softball, baseball, swim, tennis, soccer, and gymnastics. For a mother of four children, the reality of commitment is intense and stressful on everyone. The last two years have been the most difficult with all four kids in some form of a travel sport. With every weekend seemingly monopolized by activity, I found myself in a constant rotation of practices, games, and tournaments that left little time to focus on faith.
I came across an article in Time magazine this past fall that caught my attention and surmised a bit of my dilemma. The cover story showcases travel baseball and a ten-year-old boy, highlighting the pressures of our children in today's sports. The controversy of young children being consumed with a single sport so intently was thought provoking on so many levels, but it struck me with the effect it had on my own family as a distraction from our commitment to faith.
As a parent, I want to instill a sense of balance in the life of my children so priorities must be made. Making the time to focus on our faith is a priority that only we can establish. This Lenten season, I am reminded of the importance of making time to embrace my focus on faith above all else. In light of the obstacles that can be distracting for us all, whether it is sports or otherwise, I recall Philippians 3:12-4:1, especially verse 3:14: "The goal I pursue is the prize of God's upward call in Christ Jesus."
Dear God, help us to quiet the noise of the world and all its distractions and focus on You and be mindful of Your presence at all times. Guide us to know and trust You more. Amen.
