February 8, 2004. I had just walked into our house that afternoon and noticed that there were nine messages on our answering machine from the Winter Park Ski Patrol and a hospital in Denver. Our 20-year-old daughter Alexis had been critically injured in a snowboarding accident and was now in a coma. The traumatic brain injury and subsequent stroke she suffered meant her chances of survival might not be good.
Our son Rob was headquartered in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne. We prayed that we would never receive a terrible phone call about him. We never counted on the phone call coming from Colorado instead.
As we paced the hospital floors for the next few months, strangers would tell us they were praying for Alexis and our family. Prayer chains formed all over the country and cards arrived at the hospital daily with prayers and words of encouragement written on them. Prayer truly does lift one up!
Today she lives in Colorado and is able to do many things including completing college. We celebrate every day the new, wonderful life God has given her!
Dear Lord - Thank you for reminding us what is truly important at this time of year as we celebrate life, peace, hope, and joy in all the blessings you have bestowed upon us that we sometimes take for granted!! Amen
