When Helping Hurts: The Poverty of the Ungrateful - Sunday, October 12, 2014 - Dr. Lane Alderman

Can helping be hurtful?

We are in the midst of what we're calling a Season of Service... a time when we are making a special effort to join with our mission partners in serving in the community. I hope you have seen the orange flags around the sign in front of the Sanctuary. Better yet... I hope one of those flags has your name on it! Each of those flags represents a church member who has offered time and energy to serve with one of our many mission partners. On behalf of the thousand of lives being touched by that service, I want to say thank you!!!

But still... are there times when our desire to serve someone actually does more harm than good? We're going to talk about that this morning as we consider what it means to be grateful for the many blessings God has poured out in our lives. We'll discover that there is a type of poverty that we experience when we fail to say thanks for those blessings... when we convince ourselves that we are responsible for the good things we experience in life.

Sometimes that's a message that can be hard to hear... but in the midst of that message there is a word of Good News, and I am glad you are with us this morning to hear that Good News! I'm praying that this morning will be a time of renewal for us all!
