The Parables: The Waiting Father - Sunday, September 18, 2016 - Dr. Mark Brewer

*This is the complete 11:15 a.m. worship service from Sunday, September 18, 2016.

Charles Dickens called it the greatest short story of all time. Augustine called it the entire gospel in one story. As we continue our series on the Parables of Christ, we come to a beloved parable unique to Luke. The word “parable” comes from “parabollos” meaning “to come along side of” or “to compare”. There is so much to compare in this story.

Some have called it the “prodigal son”, about the one who ran away and yet returned. Some have called it “the elder brother”, about the sibling who was close but so distant. But I like that the German theologian Hulmut Thielicke called it, “the waiting Father”.

It is God who pursues and longs for us. I pray this morning we take an honest look at what we are running from, as well as, what we are running towards.
