Seven Last Words of Jesus: Today You Will Be With Me in Paradise - Sunday, February 22, 2015 - Rev. Mary Cox
“To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time for every purpose under heaven.”
That tune isn’t just a flashback from the ‘60s. Ecclesiastes 3 opens with these words and then sings a litany of experiences in our lives that have a “season.” So much in our lives is season-driven and surely, creation takes the lead on this concept. Sometimes we look forward to the beginning (and sometimes the ending) of a variety of sport seasons, travel and vacation seasons, even TV episode seasons.
On this first Sunday of a season we call Lent in the life of the church, we will begin a new journey, because that is really what a season is all about. A season in one’s life does not define a person, it is a step, an experience along the way. Lent is a journey to the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ and at each step along the way, we will stop to hear our Savior’s spoken words from the cross. For the moment of his death was truly “a time for every purpose under heaven.”
