The Lectionary we have been Listening Through this summer creates interesting juxtapositions of texts. Lectionary texts have been used by worship leaders for centuries. These texts cycle through the church year and include the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, etc. Suggested texts for national holidays were not included. My fun has been to take the Biblical texts for this Sunday that speak of God’s grace, mercy and love and also connect them with our nation’s journey balancing law and liberty.
When you read the two texts for this Sunday, listen for grace and mercy and power, listen for the heartfelt cry of individuals and of nations and communities, listen for the range of human emotion and experience from reverential awe to fear.
May you have a blessed Sunday and a happy Fourth of July,
Dr. Bill Nisbet
