Listening Through the Lectionary: Cross My Heart - Sunday, July 22, 2018 - Rev. Lyndsay Lee Slocum

Good morning!

What a wonderful morning for us to gather together to worship! This summer we have focused on reading through the Bible by studying various passages assigned by the lectionary. Not only do we study together on Sundays, but you will see on the back of the bulletin there are various passages for you to read each day throughout the week in your personal devotion and study time.

Today we are reading a difficult passage. As a matter of fact, one commentary said that no preacher would ever voluntarily preach on this passage! Our scripture this morning tells of the death of a dear friend of Jesus, John the Baptist. John the Baptist suffers a brutal death as a result of someone else’s lies and manipulation. What are we to do with a story that seems to offer so little hope? How is God speaking to us even through such a troublesome passage?

I pray our time together this morning inspires courage in the face of fear for all of us.
