The Nakuru Health Centre: In January, 2008, a Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Centre was opened at
the Nakuru Health Centre. Its services include counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS as well as community
and home services to create awareness for how to prevent new infections and re-infections for those who
are already stricken. A Comprehensive Care Clinic (CCC) has been opened, where people living with
HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) receive follow-up care and assessments on nutrition, physcial examinations, and
Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART).
With the help of the Kenyan government, a pharmacy was opened in the same month at the Health Centre
and dispenses drugs to Nakuru patients and to patients in surrounding communities.
The Training Centre: In February 2008, Queens professional hair and beauty college was introduced
in the Nakuru Training Centre. With only one student enrolled the first year, the number of students has
increased over the past two years. This course offers certification and Diploma in hair design and beauty
therapy. The course will enable students to have an edge in the competitive industry and to break down
traditional barriers in cosmetology education by offering market relevant courses. The goal is to produce
well-qualified and focused students.
Other programs available at The Training Centre include carpentry, accounting, computer courses, tailoring
and dressmaking. A proposal is now in place to establish a school of nursing in 2010, a move which many
hope will lead to setting up a community hospital to serve the local population.
A beautiful kitchen , garden where kale, onion, amaranths, managu, carrots, and spinach grow, was started
in February 2008. It is used for practical demonstrations to the Nakuru population on how to grow their own
vegetables at home and to save money in the process.
