Details:
Founded in 2004, The Drake House offers emergency residential housing for homeless women and their children in North Fulton County. This is a transitional ministry that provides short-term housing to keep the family intact, personal and skills assessment, support and empowerment. Families may stay 90 days or sometimes longer. Services provided to the mothers include computer training and career counseling. Life skills for becoming financially independent are taught to enable the family to become self-sufficient. Programs are available for the children, and mentors are especially needed for the teenagers in these families.

The number of people in need of help in the North Fulton community is increasing at a higher rate than the capacity of the existing service agencies. Women and children have become the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, with children alone comprising nearly 50% of Atlanta's homeless population. The Drake House offers an alternative to living on the street and provides hope to some of these families.

Volunteer Needs:

  1. Big brothers (male advocates) are needed to offer adivce and support to an  abundance of teenaged males.  This is an important  investment, but the payoff is priceless.
  2. Family mentors are needed. Call to find out about classes to learn how to become a mentor.

  3. Office volunteers needed to help with administrative duties.  Need computer knowledge of Word and Excel.
Wish List:  Wal-mart gift cards, Computer/printing paper/cereal and cereal bars.

Call Sandy McKinney at The Drake House - 770/587-4712, ext. 305 - to volunteer for any of these service opportunities.
